New Haven Unified School District news

Submitted By Rick La Plante

The first day of school in the New Haven District will be on Wednesday, September 1. Classes run from 8 a.m. to 2:05 p.m. at elementary schools, from 8:20 a.m. to 2:35 p.m. at middle schools, and from 8:40 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at James Logan High School. Conley-Caraballo High School classes are from 8:10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

With the District forced to reduce bus transportation as a result of continuing cuts by the state to the education budget, morning and afternoon traffic around schools is expected to be heavier than normal, especially during the first couple weeks of classes. Parents who drop off and pick up their children are advised to allow extra time in the morning and afternoon.

District schools are working with Alameda County's "Safe Routes to School" program to assist parents interested in participating in "walking school buses" and bicycle safety, and SR2S also is facilitating carpooling at six sites. To sign up online, enter the group password "onelesscar" at:

Alvarado Elementary and Alvarado Middle (
Eastin Elementary (
Emanuele Elementary (
Hillview Crest Elementary (
Cesar Chavez Middle (

Reminder: Spring break during the 2010-11 school year will be April 4-8, instead of April 25-29 as originally scheduled. The complete 2010-11 school-year calendar is on the District website (
