Open registration for After-School Band

Submitted By Lara York

The Fremont Education Foundation (FEF) will be opening registration for the After-School Band's 11th year on the first day of school, Wednesday, September 1, through its online registration system. If needed, paper forms are available in each elementary school office for parents.

All Fremont Unified students in grades 4-6 are encouraged to join After-School Band and learn an instrument. No experience is needed; these beginning, intermediate, and advanced level elementary classes teach woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments in a group experience not available elsewhere. In the spring, each band will participate in an Attendance Area Concert at their local high school. This concert is a wonderful opportunity for students to work toward a performance for their family and friends.

"We are thrilled to be able to continue offering these instrumental music classes to all interested 4th, 5th, and 6th graders in Fremont Unified right at their own school site. The support of the community through donations of both band instruments and money has made this possible year after year," said Anne Damron, Vice-President of the Fremont Education Foundation.

The program asks for a $19 registration fee, which will include the new 2010 T-shirt, plus a donation and/or volunteer time. Scholarships are available for families in financial need. No child is ever turned away from the program, and FEF wants all students to have the opportunity to learn and love playing music.

The majority of the funding for the program comes from community donations during the spring Band Telethon. Last year's telethon came up short of funds, and the Foundation is dipping into reserves to continue offering the same number of classes this year.

New students and their parents are invited to attend one of the Band Orientation Nights to learn more about the program and the instruments which the students choose on the first day of class. Band Orientation Night will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 6 at Horner Junior High or Thursday, October 7 at Centerville Junior High.

Third year After-School Band students are encouraged to join their Attendance Area Advanced band. This band is held at one school site for students in the whole area and allows them to work on more challenging music.

The Fremont Education Foundation, a non-profit 501(c) (3) established in 1991, encourages increased community involvement and investment in our schools. The After-school Band Program is open to 4th through 6th graders in FUSD at all elementary schools for no fee, and with instrument scholarships and services available for those who are financially eligible. Innovative Education Grants support innovative, quality classroom programs in FUSD grades K-12. The Guy Emanuele Sports Fund provides sportswear and equipment scholarships for financially eligible high school students in FUSD, funding for junior high sports and elementary basketball.
