Chaos takes 3rd at Santa Clara soccer tourney

Submitted By Paul Dunn

MVU 90 Red girls U-19 Division III soccer team, Chaos, traveled to South Bay and took third at the Santa Clara Rotary Cup soccer tournament on Aug. 21 and 22. It was a beautiful weekend for soccer and most Bay Area counties were represented by teams at the tournament.

On Saturday, Chaos faced two tough opponents in the Almaden Quicksilver Rebels and the West Valley Wildcats. In the morning against the Rebels, Chaos started the game lively and quickly went on offense. The Rebels countered with good defense and chances were hard to come by. It was not until five minutes into the second half that Chaos went ahead when Rhian Dunn stormed into the box and slid under the oncoming keeper to prod the ball into the gaping net. Final score: 1-0 Chaos.

Several hours later, a weary Chaos took on the West Valley Wildcats, who quickly went ahead 1-0 on a scrappy goal. Chaos fought back and, before halftime, Abigail Cristobal scored with a beautiful shot over the keeper into the top right corner of the goal from just outside the 18. Chaos continued to attack in the second half but had to wait until the very last touch of the game to win the game 2-1 when Alex Johnson headed the ball over the keeper from a well placed corner by Dunn.

Chaos finished Saturday leading their bracket, three points ahead of second place, mainly because of a strong defense which only surrendered one goal on the day.

Sunday morning, Chaos faced their biggest challenge playing against the highly-regarded Mustang Blast from Danville, knowing that a tie would secure the team a place in the tournament's Championship game. Unfortunately it was not to be as a well-fought game was decided half way through the first half when the Blast scored a lucky goal which dropped Chaos into the consolidation game.

Undaunted, Chaos met the Santa Cruz Jaws in the Sunday afternoon game and put together their best game of the tournament. Ally Cardona powered Chaos into with the lead half way through the first half with a thunderous shot over the Jaws keeper into the roof of the net from close range. Several other Chaos players came close to scoring, but were not able to add to the 1-0 first half lead.

However it was a different story in the second half as Chaos' second goal came less than 15 seconds from the start. The kickoff went straight to Melissa Urena who took the ball from half way and scored a superb solo effort from about 20 yards out.

Urena was again in the thick of things five minutes from time as she received the ball at the edge of the box and shot under the advancing keeper, only to see her shot bounce off the post. Luckily Jessica Carscadden reacted faster than everyone else, crashed the net, and was right at the post to poke home the ball to make the final score 3-0 Chaos.

It was truly a great team performance with the defense, midfield and offense playing well, and the goalkeepers, Viahey Lopez and Michelle Gent combining for the shutout.
