The Milpitas Kiwanis Club joined Kohl's Cares For Kids at a special event held on Sunday morning, August 8 at the Kohl's store in the Great Mall in Milpitas. The Kiwanis provided $100 gift cards to 70 children to shop for school clothes and necessities. With the discounts that Kohl's was offering for the day, children were actually able to spend about $118 on needed items. The children were chaperoned on their shopping spree by Kiwanis Club members, Milpitas High School Key Club members, and a number of community volunteers.

After shopping, the children, chaperones, and parents were treated to a free breakfast. Milpitas Fire Department also brought one of their large fire engines for the children to admire. Joe Santoro and the South Bay Kids provided music and entertainment for the waiting parents. By 9 a.m., 70 happy children and their parents were on their way back home.

Back packs filled with school supplies were also provided to all participating children, compliments of the Family Giving Tree.

Because of the amount spent on this shopping spree, Kohl's issued a number of Kohl's Cash certificates and the Kiwanis were able to donate $750 to the Milpitas Food Pantry and Clothes Closet to help additional needy families with school necessities.

This event would not have been possible without the generous sponsorship of business and community members. Major sponsors were: The Milpitas Kiwanis Club, Kohl's at the Great Mall, City of Milpitas, Milpitas Police Officer's Association, Milpitas Firefighter's Local 1699, Santa Clara County Deputy Sheriffs' Association, Milpitas Rotary Club, Pacific Printing, Commonwealth Central Credit Union, Allied Waste, UFCW Local 5, The Family Giving Tree, and South Bay Kids.

The Kiwanis would also like to thank the following food sponsors for providing the breakfast:
Nob Hill Foods, Hobee's Restaurant, Starbucks Coffee (Great Mall) and Christy's Donuts.
