Bill Mancebo's Player Spotlight
This week the player spotlight finds baseball's big hit, Matt Brown.
Brown has covered every position in the baseball yard but this year he kept his focus on three. Playing first base, shortstop and doing some pitching have been his ticket to getting voted from the Niles-Centerville Major Yankees team to the Niles Major all-stars who won District 14.
The more baseball the better for Matt and it's still not over for him this season. He'll soon be playing for the Union City Lookouts 12-and-under travel team. After a little Fremont Football League action for the Falcons as running back and tight end, and basketball for the Niles Elementary Bulldogs as a shooting guard and small forward Matt returns to the diamond once again, where his eight years of dedication have let him know that baseball is the sport for him.
Keeping in shape is the key to success and Brown works hard at it by hitting the gym nearly every day. His visits to 24 Hour Fitness for weight and elliptical training seem to be working out well. Outside of that he keeps it fun and prefers to ride his bicycle instead of cruising in a car whenever possible.
Now 12, Matt will be moving up to the seventh grade beginning this autumn at Centerville Jr. High and keeps his focus on sports there too. With PE as a favorite subject he looks to play first base someday for MLB's Giants or Yankees.
With all of this athleticism, Brown does find a little spare time. When he can he likes to hang out with his friends and do a little video gaming, especially Call of Duty and Red Dead Redemption. Matt likes traveling also and soon he and his family will make their annual pilgrimage to Pismo Beach; he's really looking forward to that.
Brown's dinner of choice will be nothing but Mom's chicken and rice chased down by a Coke-flavored Slurpee.
