Nominate for Milpitas Neighborhood Beautification Awards

By Meenu Gupta

Neighborhood Beautification Awards recognize Milpitas residents, organizations, and businesses for their efforts in contributing to the beautification of Milpitas neighborhoods. Established in the year 2000, the awards program builds a sense of community by honoring those who make an effort to keep the Milpitas clean and beautiful.

Properties are judged on their aesthetic appearance from the street. Residential Categories include: Hillside Area, East Valley Floor Area, Central Area, and West Area. Attractive Residential Property focuses on a single family home. Attractive Muti-Family Units category focuses on mobile homes, apartments, and duplexes. Attractive Home owners Associations category focuses on residential homes that pay homeowners association dues. Attractive Non- residential Property category focuses on nonresidential properties.

The Building a Sense of Community category focuses on how an organization, school, club, group or person has created an environment that positively impacted the neighborhood. Staff Choice Award category will select from case files of properties previously in violation of city ordinances but now comply or have always had a positive presence in the neighborhood. Attractive Non- residential Property awards will focus on non-residential properties.

All nominees will receive a certificate of recognition and winners will receive a prize. Certificates will be handed out at a City Council meeting by the Mayor and pictures of the properties will be on the City website and the City cable channel.

"There are 11 residential categories that qualify for a gift certificate to a local home improvement store," said Zulema Maggi. "All the winners are selected by a subcommittee of three members of the Community Advisory Commission." she said.

An individual may nominate themselves, a resident, a community group, homeowner association, apartment complex, multi-family unit, mobile home, business, a school that is within Milpitas City limits and may submit more than one nomination form per category. "Only Milpitas residents can be nominated but anyone can make nominations since we allow for anonymous submittals," said Maggi.

Nominations must be received by Tuesday, August 31. For more information, please call (408)586-3074. The application can be accessed online at the City's website
