Washington Hospital Participates at the Fremont Festival of the Arts

The Fremont Festival of the Arts is the largest free street-festival that currently takes place in California. This year on the first weekend in August, more than 325,000 people attended the two-day event which showcased hundreds of arts and crafts exhibitors and local businesses.

This year's festival proved to be a great opportunity to educate the community about Washington Hospital's health and wellness programs, the Washington Women's Center and showcase InHealth, a Washington Hospital Channel on Comcast 78.

InHealth Channel staff members used the festival booth as an opportunity to ask people questions about sun protection for an upcoming InHealth program: Your Concerns InHealth hosted by Dr. Barbara Kostick, M.D., medical director of Washington Hospital's Community Health Services. The program will feature short segments of people voicing their thoughts on skin cancer and how everyone can better protect themselves from the sun's harmful rays. The questions and concerns that were videotaped at the festival will be addressed by a panel of dermatologists and health care professionals in the upcoming television program.

Washington Women's Center Education Classes

The Washington Women's Center mission is to get women started on the path to good health and keep them going with programs geared especially for women. During the festival, participants were encouraged to take a moment to check out our growing list of wellness and education services, including the Women's Center wellness massage service.

"It was really great for the hospital to use the festival as an opportunity to connect with people and give so much useful information to members of our community," said Kathy Hesser, R.N., Washington Women's Center Coordinator.

Washington Women's Center offers monthly classes including their popular Lunch and Learn sessions where expert clinicians speak on a women's health topic from Noon to 1 p.m. The Women's Center also offers an Evening Lecture Series every month from 7 to 8 p.m. To see a list of upcoming classes, visit and register online at

Washington Hospital Is Going Green

Washington Hospital recognizes the critical link between the health of each individual and the health of the environment. As the hospital reaffirms its commitment to promoting a healthier community, it's taking a leading role in environmental awareness.

At the Fremont Art & Wine Festival, several of the Hospital's Green Team members assisted more than 200 participants in filling out Stop Junk Mail kits. This effort can help eliminate tons of paper waste per year, conserve trees and prevent the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. To learn more about the Hospital's Green Team, visit

"It was really great for the hospital to use the festival as an opportunity to help guide people through the wide variety of resources that Washington Hospital has to offer," said Ruth Traylor, Director of Community Outreach at Washington Hospital. "Our dedicated staff and volunteers played a big part in encouraging people to participate at our booth and we received some really positive feedback."
