Thirty-two young men and women between the ages of 14 and 20 years of age lived the life of police recruits from July 19 through July 30, as they participated in the first Alameda County Law Enforcement Explorer Academy. The Academy was hosted by the Mission Peak District Law Enforcement Advisor's Association in cooperation and participation with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, the Oakland Police Department Housing Authority, and the Pleasanton, Livermore, Hayward and Union City Police Departments. Training was held at Barnard White Middle School in Union City and the Alameda County Sheriff's Office training facility in Dublin.
During the two-week Academy students participated in rigorous physical fitness training under the instruction and supervision of two Union City Police Officers and former Marine Sergeants. The youth were provided intensive instruction in the areas of Contemporary Law Enforcement Practice and Procedure; the Criminal Justice System; Criminal Law; Crime Scene Investigation; Narcotics and Dangerous drugs; report writing; radio procedure; traffic investigation; crime prevention and training in Human Relations. In addition to classroom instruction, they also participated in Firearms Familiarization training and range safety; Emergency Vehicle Operation; Rappelling; Confidence Obstacle courses and First Aid and Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) courses where they also received their First Aid/CPR certification card.
Since 1972 young men and women interested in careers in Law Enforcement have provided a valuable service to the Union City Police Department. Members of the Post provide assistance in activities such as traffic and crowd control during community events, assistance in large scale searches of missing elderly and children, and investigate assistance and neighborhood watch assistance such as disseminating crime bulletins.
