In the double-elimination Section 3 Juniors tournament held at Gomes Elementary School in Fremont, District 45's Mt. Eden had success, while the District 14 representative Niles-Centerville was on the losing side.

Mt. Eden advanced into the winners' bracket of the tournament with its 7-1 win over District 67's Tracy American Little League on Saturday, July 17. Mt. Eden rode the three-hit, eight-strikeout pitching of Juan Amburo, who went six and two-thirds. He was relieved by Jordan Armstrong for the final out -- a strikeout.

"We have enough quality pitching to win this tournament," said Mt. Eden manager Danny Gonzalez.

Meanwhile, with the bats, Alex Tunchez led the Mt. Eden attack, going 2-3 with a double and three RBIs. Edwin Lemos, Alex Leon and Ryan Mitchell all chipped in to move Mt. Eden one game closer to winning the sectional tournament.

A day later, on Sunday, July 18, Niles-Centerville took on District 52's Half Moon Bay. This game turned out to be a barn burner. In the bottom of the first Niles took the early lead when starting pitcher Nick Lawrence helped his own cause, driving in Latrell Harris for the 1-0 lead.

However, Half Moon Bay would answer with a five spot in the top of the second for a 5-1 lead before Niles added three in the bottom of the third inning on a walk and four consecutive hits, cutting the deficit to 5-4.

Brett Berghammer led off the D52 fourth inning with a single, and advanced to third on a two-base error. Berghammer was singled home and, after a walk, that was the end of the line for Lawrence. Shortstop Andrew Llantos came on to pitch and put out the fire as Niles trailed 6-4 going into bottom of the fifth.

Niles regained the lead in the fifth when Lawrence and Maricano Reichel were both able to trot in on a Jimmy Roney three-run blast to right. After Niles tacked on another run, they took a 8-6 lead into the sixth.

Not to be out done, Half Moon Bay came right back with four runs to retake the lead, 10-8. But again Niles fought back with a run in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap to 10-9, but the offense would stall, and the game ending at the 10-9 clip.

Half Moon Bay met Mt. Eden in the winners' bracket on Monday, July 19, at Gomes; Niles took on District 67's Tracy in the losers' bracket, also on Monday, but at Vallejo Mill Elementary in Fremont. Scores were unavailable at press time.

The Section 3 Juniors tournament will culminate with the championship game on Wednesday, July 21, with a potential winner-take-all game on Thursday, July 22 (should the losers' bracket winner win on Wednesday). All games are scheduled for Gomes at 5:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, in the Section 5 Seniors tournament at Almaden Little League's Challenger Field in San Jose, Branham Hills of San Jose defeated Milpitas National, 18-4, on Saturday, July 17. In Sunday's elimination game, Branham Hills needed to only win to advance to the Senior Division 2 (Nor Cal) Tournament at Los Altos High School next week. If Milpitas won, it would force a do-or-die game on Monday, July 19. Results and scores were unavailable at press time.
