Theatre: High School Musical 2 hits Milpitas

By Julie Grabowski

Live it up and party down with "High School Musical 2" presented by the Milpitas Rainbow Theatre through July 24. Based on the second of the popular Disney Channel Original Movies, HMS2 has the East High Wildcats out for summer and ready for a new adventure.

When Troy gets the gang summer jobs at the Lava Springs Country Club, friendships and priorities are tested as they work under the queen of the club, the selfish and controlling Sharpay. Dreams are on the line as they compete for the Star Dazzle Award at the Midsummer Night's Talent Show and prepare for their futures. What will they compromise to get what they want? Will it be the best summer ever for the Wildcats, or the longest?

Obviously for the younger set, HMS2 is an entertaining escape with catchy, upbeat songs and fun choreography. The wide age-ranging student actors put their hearts into the show and enjoy what they're doing. Strong voices and performances come from McKenna Lee as Sharpay, Amanda Tabora as Gabriella, and Jaron Liclican as the ever-in demand Troy. Lee is comfortable and spot on with her role, solid and engaging throughout, especially in the indulgent fun of "Fabulous." Jason Soliz is pleasing comic relief as Ryan, and a standout as the Fresh Fish Prince in the number "Humuhumunukunukuapua'a." Marley Westley and Katie Williams are also enjoyable as the long-suffering Fulton and Fulton's assistant.

"High School Musical 2" is light entertainment with a good message and fun music, perfect for a family outing or a fun night with some of your BFFs.

General admission tickets are $8 (ages 13-49), and $6 for children and seniors.
