Barracudas trounce Highlands Sharks

Submitted By Melissa Ng

On Saturday, July 17, the Highlands Sharks were welcomed by the Mission Valley Barracudas to the Mission Valley Swim Club for the seventh dual swim meet of the East Bay Swim League season. Undefeated in their season so far, the Barracudas hoped to win this meet in order to become the ESBL Southern Division champions.

Mission Valley made quick work of its opponent, beating them by a 654-384 count en route to that Souther Division championship and continuing their undefeated streak.

There must have been something special in the water during the Hawaiian-themed day. The following Barracuda swimmers achieved new personal best times in all of their individual events: Ivy Chan (9-10), Michael Conn (11-12), Trevor Fung (9-10), Devon Crane (8 and Under), Adam Hancock (11-12), Evan Huang (11-12), Stephen Jeffery (11-12), Kyle Kohn (8 and Under), Leah Martin (15-18), Jamie Ng (11-12), Hannah Scobel (15-18), Jesse Wheeler (13-14), Hesper Wu (11-12), and Nathan Young (9-10).

In between the fly and the 100 IM, Barracuda coach Don French presented flowers to high school graduates Hannah Scobel, Hannah Imhof and Tyler Ocon. Barracudas also said thanks and goodbye to Ryan "Rocket" Tanakit, as he finishes out his last year of swimming eligibility with the EBSL. These four have been with the team since they were wee tiny little fish and will be missed.

Congratulations to Yaelle Kretchmer (U-8), who took five seconds off her25M backstroke, and 68 seconds off her freestyle; Devon Crane (U-8), for taking off more than eight seconds off his backstroke; Issac Wu (13-14) and Trevor Fung (11-12), for improving their 100 IM by over five seconds each; and also to Tanushri Sundar (11-12) and Ryon Motamedi (11-12), for taking off more than seven seconds each for their butterfly.

Many thanks to the parents and coaches who do their job so well. This week we say a special thanks to our Barracudas swim team board who spend numerous hours to make the swim meets go well and look easy: Jane Conn, Emily Swanson, Jeff Martin, Andrea Hancock, Rosana McCuaig, May Chen, Doris and James Wu, Rhonda Ducoty and Russ Hiroto.

Next week the Barracudas meet Treeview in the final regular season swim meet on Saturday, July 24.
