By Kevin Yin
The opening round of the Minor 9/10 Section 3 All-Star Tournament began last weekend, Saturday, July 17. The tournament features the champions of five little league district tournaments, including District 14's champion Newark American Little League.
Hillsbrough (from District 52), Salida (District 67), San Leandro (District 45) and San Ramon (District 57) round out the other four Section 3 participants in the double-elimination tournament.
In the opening round, Salida faced off against Hillsbrough, while San Leandro played San Ramon. The winner of the Salida, Hillsrough game would advance to the winners' bracket semifinals, while Newark American would then play the winner of the San Leandro, San Ramon game for the right to advance to the winners' bracket semifinal. The defeated teams will head to the losers' bracket.
Salida crushed Hillsbrough, 10-0, in the opening game on Saturday, July 17. Salida jumped out to a commanding 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to RBI singles by Carlos Pena and Matt Souza, and a two-RBI double by Jared Kabrich.
They lengthened their lead to 7-0 in the second with a three-run homerun by Brandon Paison. The lead jumped to 9-0 in the fourth off of a two-run home run by Matt Dallas. After Salida went up 10-0 in the fifth, the game was called on account of the 10-run mercy rule, which ends a little league game if either team is up by 10 or more runs at the end of an inning.
Meanwhile, San Ramon defeated San Leandro, 6-3, to set up a match with Newark American in the second round. Salida immediately advanced to the semifinals to await the winner of the San Ramon, Newark American game; Hillsbrough and San Leandro filtered to the losers' bracket, where San Leandro staved off elimination with a 1-0 victory, eliminating Hillsbrough.
In the second round on Sunday, July 18, San Ramon defeated Newark American, 15-5. It was a close contest early on, with Newark American holding a 3-2 lead going into the top of the fourth inning, when San Ramon seized control of the game with a devastating offensive display, garnering six runs on seven hits to build an 8-3 advantage.
San Ramon blew the game wide open in the top of the fifth, blasting in seven more runs on six hits, including RBI doubles by Jack Powers and Nick McCambridge. San Ramon held a commanding 15-3 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. Newark American finally got its offense cranking again with a two-run double by Blaise Stanfield, but it wasn't enough. The inning closed out 15-5, and San Ramon won by virtue of the mercy rule.
