Union City National Padres won round one when they defeated Union City American Tigers in the championship game of the District 45 Little League Senior (15-16 year olds) Tournament of Champions, 4-0.

They will meet again this week, Wednesday, July7, 5:30 p.m. in the winners' bracket of the double elimination, D45 Senior All-Star Tournament, played on UCN's home field, James Logan High School in Union City.

In first round action, UCA defeated San Lorenzo American, 4-1, while UCN beat Ashland, 17-0. Then in round two, UCA beat Castro Valley, 14-0, while UCN set up the clash of the two unbeatens with a 13-3 victory over Mt. Eden.

In the UCN-ME game at Logan, it was Edwin Alvarenga taking the mound for Eden manager Chris Staley while Alex Maldonado toed the rubber for UC manager Eli Ramirez III (or "Papa Smurf" as his players affectionately call him).

Both teams went scoreless in the first inning before the Nationals posted two runs each in the second and third, and three more in the fourth inning. Visitors finally got on the board with a run in their half of the fourth and two more in the fifth for a 7-3 UCN lead going into the bottom of the fifth.

That is when the hosts put the game away. After two outs in the bottom of the fifth, UCN scored four runs and Alvarenga had to leave the mound as his pitch count when over the 95 limit he was allowed under Little League rules for his age group. Guillermo Davis came in and was unable to put out the fire as a walk, double, stolen base and wild pitch plated two more runs to give UCN a 13-3 lead and the game as the 10-run mercy rule after 5 innings was invoked.

Leading hitters for the hosts were catcher Justin Rubal, a double and a single; third baseman Gabriel Arias, two singles; and first baseman Jesse Rivera on base four times via two singles, a walk and hit by pitch. For ME, Alvarenga tripled and singled and center fielder Mike Pedraza had two singles.

"We just didn't capitalize on our chances and we ran ourselves out of an inning," said Staley. "At least we get to play again tomorrow."

Loser of this Wednesday's game will fall to the losers' bracket and play the winner of Mt. Eden-SLZA on Saturday, July 10, at 10 a.m. at Logan. The UCA-UCN winner then faces Saturday's winner on Tuesday, July 13, with the "if necessary" game on July 14. Both games will be at 5:30 p.m. at Logan.

In other D45 Senior All-Star action last week it was SLZA 12, Ashland 1; and ME 11, CV 9.
