Center for Spiritual Living in Fremont is celebrating 35 years under the direction of its pastor, Dr. Jay Scott Neale. A dinner in honor of this occasion and Neale's 70th birthday will be held on Friday, July 9, at 7 p.m. at the Center in Fremont.
Neale arrived in Fremont in 1975 and started his work at the YMCA. Rapid growth afforded the means to purchase a property in Niles Canyon, which the congregation eventually outgrew. In 1985, Neale and his followers moved to their current location at the corner of Blacow and Stevenson.
Presently, Neale, his wife and co-pastor Rev. Dr. Cynthia Cavalcanti-Neale, 12 staff ministers, and as many prayer practitioners serve a congregation that is growing again. The team teaches a spiritual philosophy whose roots can be traced to Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thomas Troward, and Ernest Holmes. Services take place Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., as well as Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m.
Neale is the author of "The Power of Positive Purpose," a collection of spiritual essays upon which his radio program by the same name is based. Listeners can tune in to KEST 1450 AM Wednesday mornings at 7 a.m. Reverend Dr. Cynthia Cavalcanti-Neale is editor-in-chief of Creative Thought Magazine, a monthly devotional that has been in print for nearly a century.
