MSJLL Junior All-Stars Off to an Exciting Start
Submitted By Ed Hugo
It was a game that Jigar Desai will never forget as the Mission San Jose Little League and Newark American Little Leagues faced off in a first round Junior All-Star game on Sunday, June 27, at Warm Springs Little League as Mission prevailed, 10-7, on Desai's walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Newark jumped out to an early two-run lead in the top of the first inning with Davey Duncan and Ricky Powers driving in runs off of Mission starting pitcher Thomas Rodriquez. Mission answered back with five runs of their own in the bottom of the first as base hits by Aneesh Kauravlla, Adam Curtis and Desai keyed the early rally. Nikhil Menon walked and scored Mission's sixth run in the third inning, which ended Mission's scoring until the seventh.
Meanwhile, Newark chipped away at Mission's lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings narrowing Mission's lead to 6-4. Newark then jumped ahead, 7-6, with a three run fifth inning, highlighted by a solo homer off the bat of Kalyn Smith.
Rodriquez pitched five strong innings for Mission and was relieved by Mark Cho in the sixth. Cho held the Newark team scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, setting the stage for Desai's dramatics in the bottom of the seventh. Trailing 7-6, Kauravlla started the inning for Mission with a sharp single to left. Brian Zucker then drew his fourth walk of the game and Curtis laid down a perfect bunt single to load the bases setting the stage for Desai's walk-off grand slam.
The Mission junior all-stars next play Niles-Centerville on Tuesday, June 29, in the winner's bracket.
