Summer Concerts in the Park

By Mona Shah

According to an old adage, the best things in life are free. Midsummer afternoons might just prove that true. On Sunday afternoons in Hayward, you can spread a blanket and hear live music for no more than the cost of what you pack in your cooler. Join the Hayward Municipal Band as the great American tradition continues this summer.

For over 50 years, the Hayward Municipal Band has entertained young and old with the summer concert series at the park, playing a music repertoire that includes show tunes, classical, big band, marches and patriotic music. Concerts are free, thanks to the sponsorship of the City of Hayward and the Hayward Area Recreation District (HARD). Forty musicians with ages ranging from late teens to early 80's are members of the impressive band and they always present professional caliber performances.

Tony Morelli, a Hayward native had been the band's director and conductor since 1960. When he passed away, his daughter and assistant conductor Kathy Morelli Maier took over. Maier has been the band's conductor for the past 13 years. She took over band rehearsals when her father had back surgery in 1977 and eventually became head conductor when Morelli passed away.

For more concert information, including Sunday program schedules, visit the band website at Bring your family, friends and picnic lunch to Memorial Park to relax, listen and enjoy, Classical, Popular, Big Band, Jazz, Musicals, Latin and more.
