Mission Valley snapped the Newark Bluefins Southern Division East Bay Swim League dual meet win streak with a closely fought 560 to 487 victory Saturday, June 19, evening.
This was a battle of the top two finishers in the 2009 EBSL championships and a closely-contended meet. While both teams were down a few swimmers due to high school graduations, the younger swimmers stepped up.
Jennifer Wang set a Bluefins team record in the 9- and 10-year-old Girls Freestyle with a time of 14:53; Joshua Tsai improved the team mark in the 9- and 10-year-old Boys Back with a time of 17.36.
The Bluefins made the contest interesting with a first through fourth sweep in the 15-18 girls butterfly. Tory Gerome took first with a time of 29.81; Kayla Rossell placed second at 30.12; McKenzie Lee finished third in 30.96; and Kristen Schmit rounded out the sweep with a time of 31.56.
Sam Haber took first in the 15-18 back stroke with a time of 28.12 and led all scorers with 20.5 points. All in all, the Bluefins had 19 swimmers score in double figures. Albert Lee, Emily Loaisiga and Jennifer Wang added 18 while Jerry Quan scored 16 points.
The Bluefins are back in action this Saturday, June 26, at Highlands Sharks with the two teams diving into things at 8:30 a.m. |
