Splash down for Candle Lighters
Known more for creation of a haunting ghost house every October, the Candle Lighters took time out this year for an excursion to Fremont's Aqua Adventure to hurtle down waterslides and drift along the lazy river. Candle Lighter financial contributions were a critical factor for the infusion of State funds and additional local contributions to complete construction of the water park last year. This organization is active all year although most are aware of its existence during its annual Ghost House event as Halloween nears.
For 40 years, this charitable women's group (with husbands and other male assistance) have raised funds through the creation of an annual Ghost House, now held at Fremont's Chadbourne Carriage House. During the year, proposals from non-profit organizations are received and a vote is taken to determine where Ghost House proceeds - $30,000 to $50,000 - will be distributed. Throughout their existence, the Candle Lighters have donated over $1.5 million.
Taking time from water frolics, ballots were distributed and tallied. The following organizations applied for financial assistance from proceeds of the 2010 Candle Lighters Ghost House (organizations are listed in alphabetical order).
