Paint-In Memory boxes
Submitted By Donna Singer
The Society of Decorative Painters, an international painters association, is a network of painting peers. These volunteers who have been working on memory boxes and treasure boxes will have the opportunity to paint together on June 19 in Newark at the McGregor Educational Center. They will see samples of completed Memory Boxes and jointly celebrate their gift to grieving parents.
"Our chosen community project is the Memory Box Program. Boxes are hand painted by our members and donated to hospital grief programs for distribution to parents who have lost children during or after pregnancy in this national effort. The boxes are used to store keepsakes of their children. This is a project that touched our hearts and we are proud to participate," explains Donna Singer, of Northern California Decorative Artists (NCDA).
"We understand that we cannot help these families through the tremendous loss, but we can give them a small gift to hold the things that touched their child. It is in this way that we will be able to reach out to them with comfort and support," said Singer.
Roseanne Ruth is a nurse in the labor and delivery department at Kaiser Hospital Hayward. "The families are very grateful for beautiful hand painted boxes for the ID bracelet, lock of hair, important papers and other keepsakes. NCDA chapter has supplied boxes for the program and since participating in this program, our Kaiser has received in excess of 100 painted boxes," states Rush.
The program is "all volunteer", and all donated funds are used for the program. Please visit www.memoryboxes.org for more information or if you want a free pattern, type "memory boxes free pattern" in your search window.
Bring your unpainted boxes - come ready to paint designs. Bring your own lunch or go out to nearby places. Morning Coffee and treats provided by the chapter. Call Donna Singer at (925) 803-4172 to RSVP.
