Letter to the editor: Anti-smoking ordinance

I am a 31-year old mother of a two-year old boy and am expecting another baby. I write to applaud the City of Fremont for the new smoke-free, outdoor-dining ordinance that took effect in December 2009.

I was one of the speakers who addressed the council members last year and brought up the issue that I could not enjoy going to Starbucks or other restaurants with outdoor-dining patios with my son because I was worried about outdoor smoking. My son and I both have asthma and when I am near someone who is smoking I feel like I am choking. My chest tightens up and it's hard for me to breathe. I could just imagine how my two-year old might feel.

I am five months pregnant and it feels great to be able to have a nice lunch with my family and not worry about someone smoking next to me. Thank you, City of Fremont, for passing this ordinance.
