YMCA community campaign closing in on goal
Submitted By David Hembree
The Fremont/Newark YMCA is close to achieving its 2010 fundraising goal. Setting a $54,000 goal in a tough economy was ambitious, but according to Brian Hughes, volunteer chairperson of this year's Annual Partners Campaign, "Thanks to the efforts of our wonderful volunteers, our partners, and most of all the support from the local community we are very close to obtaining our goal. With only $7,500 left to go, I know we can do it with just a little more help from the community we serve".
The Fremont/Newark YMCA strives to make its programs available to all, regardless of ability to pay. With that in mind, the YMCA works with community partners to provide funding that goes toward financial assistance for local children and families.
"I remember selling YMCA peanuts just to get to summer camp" said Fremont/Newark YMCA director David Hembree. "Today, it is not practical to ask kids to raise their own funds in that way. The YMCA depends on volunteers to seek donations for what we call 'camperships.' This offers families in need an opportunity to enjoy our great YMCA programs." Hembree said.
This is the 125th anniversary of YMCA Camping, a tradition of fun and friendship that has changed the lives of generations of YMCA campers. "Donations to the YMCA Annual Partners campaign not only change the life of a child, it can change the world one child at a time," Hughes said.

The YMCA offers a wide array of programs including licensed school age child care, summer day camp, youth sports, adult health and wellness, and leadership programming for high school students.
