Union City Police shoot armed man
Submitted By Captain Finnerty, Union City PD
Police shot a man at the Green Haven Apartments on Saturday, May 29 after he allegedly pointed a shotgun at them.
The incident took place at 8:40 p.m. when the Police received a call from a resident at the Green Haven Apartments reporting that they could hear a female crying and yelling for help. A second call was received shortly thereafter from another female claiming that her stepfather had armed himself with a gun and was with her mother in their apartment. Officers responded to the complex and were able to make contact with the male subject. They determined he was upset over his failing relationship with his wife and that he had threatened suicide earlier in the day. Officers were able to secure the release of his wife. As the woman exited her apartment, the officers could see that her husband was armed with a shotgun.
The officers negotiated with the male subject as he walked around in his apartment. On numerous occasions, the male subject told police that he was going to come out shooting. Numerous times the male subject came to the door or walked onto the balcony of his home with the gun in his possession. However, he did not threaten anyone with the weapon.
Approximately two hours into the incident the male subject exited his apartment as he had in the past, but on this occasion he pointed the shotgun at officers, attempting to shoot at them. The officers responded in defense and shot the male subject. The subject sustained four gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery. He is expected to recover. No other persons were injured in this incident. Names of the involved parties are being withheld at this time.
