June 1, 2010 > First write-in candidate in 15 years First write-in candidate in 15 years By Simon Wong A Chabot College student filed election documents on May 11 to run for Mayor of Hayward as a write-in candidate in the June 8, 2010 General Municipal Election. Ryan Belden is competing with Michael Sweeney, mayoral incumbent and former California State Assemblyman. He is the first write-in candidate for more than a decade in the City of Hayward. "I am a Political Science major and, hopefully, that will lead to a job in politics, though I want to be elected more than work behind the scenes," explained 24-year old Belden. "At the moment, I am working as part of Bob Wieckowski's campaign for State Assembly District 20." There were no other write-in candidates who filed by the May 25, 2010, deadline.
