Water Conservation Poster and Slogan Contest Awards
Submitted By Frank Jahn
More than 100 people attended the Alameda County Water District's (ACWD) Water Conservation Poster and Slogan Contest awards ceremony on May 13. Thirty-seven students from public and private schools in Fremont, Newark, and Union City were honored for their creativity in producing posters and slogans reminding residents of the Tri-City area of the importance of using water wisely. Winning entries appear in ACWD's 2010-2011 Water Conservation Calendar.
The 25 posters and 12 slogans highlighted in this year's calendar were judged to be the winners (based on artistic ability, creativity, and water conservation message) from nearly 1,600 entries.
Prerika Chawla, a sixth grader at Gomes Elementary School in Fremont, was the grand prize winner in this year's contest. Her "Beauty Dwells in Every Drop" themed poster appears on the cover of the Water Conservation Calendar. Mrs. Ferreira, Chawla's teacher, received a check for $100 she can use for a classroom project or field trip.
Suprav Goswami, a third grader at Mission Valley Elementary School in Fremont, and Tina Chen, a sixth grader at Alvarado Middle School in Union City, were both first place winners. Their posters also appear prominently in the calendar.
Each winner was congratulated by an ACWD Board member. Winners received award certificates and gift certificates to a local department store.
The Poster and Slogan Contest is an annual event and is open to 1st-6th grade classrooms in the ACWD service area. Nearly 1,600 students submitted entries this year, representing 41 schools and more than 135 classrooms. ACWD has sponsored the Poster and Slogan Contest since 1998.
The Poster and Slogan Contest is just one element of ACWD's School Education Program. The Education Program provides local school classrooms with educational resources that stress the various facets of water science and water management with the objective of producing citizens capable of making informed decisions regarding state and local water resources. The education program reaches more than 27,000 students annually throughout the Tri-City area.
