Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteers
Submitted By Christine LaBadie
The City of Fremont's Family Resource Center (FRC), a division of City of Fremont's Human Services Department, exists to strengthen families. A crucial part of this support is to enhance the ability of families to be economically self-sufficient.
For eight years, FRC has been a part of the Alameda County "Earn It! Keep It! Save It!" Collaborative Partnership providing 39 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites throughout the county.
This Partnership includes the Internal Revenue Service, United Way of the Bay Area, and a large group of Bay Area community based organizations and banking partners such as Citibank, Fremont Bank, Union Bank and Community Financial Resources.
The Fremont VITA program at the FRC is recognized as the largest single service site in Alameda County providing not only tax assistance but banking assistance and food stamp clinics with linkage to vital family support services to assist families and individuals work toward economic self sufficiency.
One hundred thirty-four dedicated volunteers who speak 22 different languages, including American Sign Language, gave a collective total of over 7,414 hours of their time and effort as VITA Coaches, tax assistors, greeters, screeners, registrars, coaches, trainers, Fremont Family Resource Center outreach and food stamp assistors, translators, transmitters and helpers.
2010 was another "record breaking year" as our volunteers helped more than 1,702 families claim more than $2.9M in tax refunds for 2009. This represents real money in the pockets of families in our community who need it the most.
Thanks to each and every single volunteer for your service to our city. We wish to recognize our principle partners Vanessa Muniz (United Way of the Bay Area) and Deborah Torres (IRS) for supporting this vital campaign and extend a big congratulations to VITA Coordinator Carolyn Robertson who, with lead transmitter Manjula Allam and the VITA Coaches, guided the entire campaign supported by FRC staff Loretta Williams.
