Kids and kites go together like peanut butter and jelly-you rarely find one without the other. On Saturday, May 15, you'll find plenty of kids and kites at the Kids 'n' Kites Festival at Central Park in Fremont. The fun-filled event is organized by the City of Fremont Parks & Recreation Department, presented by American Swim Academy, and is a kid-friendly and family-oriented springtime celebration.

The festival first started in 2000 as an opportunity for the Fremont Parks & Recreation Department to give back to the community and reconnect with its customers and citizens. There were just ten booths in the first year and one main sponsor-American Swim Academy.

Over the past decade, the event has grown to include dozens of sponsors, more than 30 interactive booths, live stage performances, music, and plenty of high-flying fun. More than 10,000 attendees are expected to attend this year's celebration-the largest one-day festival of its kind in the East Bay.

The first 2,500 children in attendance will receive a free kite, courtesy of American Swim Academy. If you don't arrive in time for a kite, don't fret-there are plenty of other opportunities for fun.

All the booths at the event are aimed at children and families, featuring interactive activities. Many feature giveaways for both kids and parents. Most are hosted by event sponsors and best of all, the activities are free! So go ahead, let your 5- year old try and throw a ping pong ball into a floating paper cup more than once. Chances are, he'll not only walk away with a smile, but with a prize of some sort as well!

Live entertainment will be offered at half-hour intervals all day long on the main stage. The premier performer is Zun Zun, a children's educational musical group. They will perform two sets, one at 11 a.m. and the second at 1:30 p.m. The group works closely with Alameda County to do in-school performances, singing songs about the earth and our environment in a lively and entertaining way.

Between the live performances, music will be playing and families are free to mingle at the various booths.

Attendance at the event is free to visitors of all ages. Food will be available to purchase, and is the only item with a cost at the event.

On the same day, Aqua Adventure will offer a Pre-season Splash (weather permitting) from 2 to 5 pm. A special one-time entrance price of $5 per person makes it an affordable way to stay cool and enjoy the water park. Current season pass holders can enter for free. The 40-foot waterslides, 700-foot lazy river, and "little squirt" play area provide entertainment for every age and energy level. Season passes will be available for purchase, giving customers the chance to enjoy the fun all season long. The water park will officially open for business on Saturday, May 22.

Whether you're flying a kite, dancing to the music, floating down the lazy river, or just enjoying the fresh air, this event has something for kids of all ages.
