Spectacular Broadway Pops Concert

Submitted By Susan Rose

The Fremont Symphony Orchestra presents a spectacular all Broadway Pops Concert on May 15, with guest Conductor Greg "Suds" Sudmeier. Founder of the renowned Skywalker Symphony at Lucas Film, Sudmeier has conducted many of the country's most accomplished studio musicians for numerous film and recording projects, including the Grammy nominated "Star Wars Trilogy" album with composer John Williams. In television, Mr. Sudmeier served as Music Director of "The Afternoon Show" with Ann Fraser and Ross McGowan on KPIX in San Francisco.

A Bay Area native, Mr. Sudmeier attended the Eastman School of Music, where he received the Duke Ellington Scholarship for "outstanding achievement in arranging and orchestration." He has served on the faculty of music programs at the University of Hawaii, University of the Pacific and California State University at Hayward.

Don Sanchez, arts and entertainment editor of ABC Channel 7 News will join Mr. Sudmeier as Master of Ceremonies. Mr. Sanchez was previously the co-anchor of ABC 7 Morning News and has been with the station for over 30 years. He received the George Foster Peabody Award for his coverage of the 1989 earthquake and has received two news Emmy awards. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Mr. Sanchez will introduce Sudmeier's own arrangements from various Broadway musicals, including "Wicked," "The Producers," "Chicago," "West Side Story," "Fiddler on the Roof," "The Music Man," "Sweeney Todd" "and The Sound of Music." Singers Alexa Ortega and Adam Berry will perform "Elaborate Lives" from Elton John's "Aida." The Greg Sudmeier singers will add their voices to many of the Broadway shows.

Erika Johnson, David Fonnegra, Mayo Sugano and Jekyns Pelaez from Diablo Ballet will dance to selections from the Tony award winning musical "Swing" choreographed by Lynn Taylor-Corbett.

Other surprises will be in store for the audience. This promises to be a very exciting performance at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts.
