Tennis: Moreau Catholic High School's number-one singles player, senior Derek Lee, steamrolled through his competition in the Hayward Area Athletic League this season ... except for one opponent who would become his nemesis: Castro Valley's freshman phenom Miguel Diaz. Diaz, on his way to going undefeated, had beaten Lee in two tight matches.
But Lee attained sweet revenge when it mattered most, beating Diaz 6-3, 6-3 in the finals of the HAAL League Championships at Harbor Bay in Alameda. With the win, Lee will advance to the North Coast Section individual championships at Santa Rosa High School on Friday and Saturday, May 7-8. Lee beat Bishop O'Dowd's Jeff Budd 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinal.
"Derek is a tremendous athlete, one who displays impressive dedication and determination every time he steps onto the court," said Moreau coach Tony Rodriguez. "He's a coach's immaculate dream."
Moreau's doubles team of Neal Enriquez and Addy Dharma nearly pulled off a clean sweep for the Mariners, as they got to the finals of the doubles tournament before falling to the Bishop O'Dowd tandem of David Brown and Jeremy Yu by a score of 6-4, 6-4.
The Mission Valley Athletic League championships, held at the Fremont Tennis Center, have been dominated by Mission San Jose High School. The final, played on Monday, May 3, matched Kyle Richter against Brandon Nguyen, both of whom are from the Mission San Jose team. (Results unavailable at press.)
Golf: Moreau extended their undefeated record to 12-0 on the links, beating San Leandro High School 196-236 at Lake Chabot Golf Course. Carlos Briones shot an even-par 35 to lead all scorers. His teammates Blake Ramos shot a 37, and Kevin Murray shot 39 for the victorious Mariners.
Badminton: Mount Eden High School extended their winning streak to 128 straight with a 14-1 win over Hayward High School. The Monarchs are 10-0 in the HAAL this season.
Moreau defeated Arroyo High School 8-7. The Mariners' top singles player Eric Cruz celebrated his birthday by winning his match, 19-21, 21-19, 21-9, over Brian Chen.
