"Finish Strong" Book is Short and Sweet, But Definitely Not Weak
By Richard Medugno
"Amazing stories of Courage and Inspiration" is the subtitle for Dan Green's Finish Strong - a small gift book that strings together pithy quotes and many tales of extraordinary accomplishment.
In the introduction to the book, Green says that "When you combine 'Finish' with 'Strong' you create a powerful platform for action." His goes on to say that for more than 10 years, this has been his "mantra for achieving excellence in life, sport and business."
The book features several heroic tales that many are familiar with like 1980 USA gold medal hockey team's "Miracle on Ice" and boxer Jim Braddock's "Cinderella Man." It also has little-known or forgotten stories like that of Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne's unsuccessful decision to go for a two-point conversion and the win, instead of settling for a tie and backing into the national championship.
Unfortunately, there are several stories that clearly don't seem to belong, but dropped in to flesh out the book. The short pieces on Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald's (with no reference to his ownership of the San Diego Padres later in his life) and Helen Keller are jarring detours in a book that generally flows well.
All and all, Finish Strong is a real good, feel-good gift for anyone who needs a little pep talk. The book comes with a CD featuring "Eye of the Tiger" music along with excerpts and inspirational quotes. This kind of material does make you want to get out there and tackle life.
In fact, according to a New Orleans Times-Picayune article, this year's Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints ordered copies of Finish Strong for all his teammates before the beginning of last season. Finishing strong became a character trait of the team, and a rallying cry for the city's football fans.
Not only did the Saints come back in NFC championship game against the Minnesota Vikings, they did as well against the Indianapolis Colts to win Super Bowl XLIV. Those are certainly good examples of strong finishes.
