Submitted By Kristin Delaney-Wiggins

Moreau Catholic High School received the City of Hayward Environmental Achievement Award at the April 20 Hayward City Council meeting for its exemplary efforts to conserve natural resources and educate students about the importance of protecting our environment.

The annual City of Hayward Environmental Achievement Award honors Hayward businesses, residents, schools and organizations that have demonstrated exceptional efforts to conserve natural resources. Recognition is given to awardees in areas such as recycling efforts, waste reduction and water conservation.

Moreau Catholic students, parents, faculty and staff made concerted efforts this year to reduce Moreau's carbon footprint by implementing a paper-reduction program using software called PaperCut ( Each student has an account with PaperCut and is allowed to print up to 50 copies per semester. Students may share or transfer their credits with other students or purchase additional credits, if necessary. Faculty and staff printing is also tracked through PaperCut. The direct result was a 75 percent reduction in the use of paper and toner cartridges this year.

To encourage the safe and environmentally sound dismantling and recycling of electronic waste, the class of 2013 partnered with E-Recycling of California to collect and dispose of electronics. Moreau students, parents, faculty and staff brought in an astonishing 7,758 pounds of e-waste including old computers, printers, monitors, televisions, etc.

In celebration of Earth Week, the parent-led Environmental Stewardship Committee and student-led EarthWise Club put together a packed schedule of activities and presentations. On Monday, the students heard presentations from the Wildlife Associates and Alliance for Climate Education. An organic salad bar will be offered at Tuesday's lunch-time to encourage a healthy lifestyle and promote consumption of locally grown and environmental friendly produce. On Thursday Moreau hosted an Ecofair on campus with 12 exhibitors from various environmental organizations. Additionally, the Earthwise Club is selling aluminum water bottles to help reduce the number of plastic water bottles in our landfills.
