Are you ready to have fun and become healthier? Then be sure to bring your children to YMCA's Annual Healthy Kids Day, "Put Play in Your Day," at Lake Elizabeth on Saturday, April 17. As a joint collaboration between the Fremont/Newark YMCA branch, Kidango, Mission Valley ROP, and Ohlone College, Healthy Kids Day aims to educate families about the importance of leading healthy, fun lifestyles.

"There is a growing concern with childhood obesity nowadays, and with the stress of today's life, people aren't taking care of themselves," says Deepa Mehta, associate program director at the Fremont/Newark Family YMCA. At the event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., over 40 vendors will offer families the chance to learn about the various community resources available to them to lead healthier lives. Most people don't know that the YMCA, for example, has a gym with cheaper membership than many other fitness gyms in the area.

Meanwhile, kids will be able to participate in various hands-on activities during Healthy Kids Day, such as arts and crafts, toddler play courses, a "music and movement" activity, and more. Additionally, the day will be filled with music and entertainment, including demonstrations from Top Flight Gymnastics, performances by the Niosha Dance Academy, and a puppet show put on by Kidango.

And as if that wasn't enough, a free raffle will be going on throughout the day in which each family will receive one ticket. Fremont Mayor Bob Wasserman will deliver a proclamation at 11 a.m. as well.

Ultimately, YMCA's Healthy Kids Day is meant to inspire people to lead healthy lifestyles the other 364 days of the year. The event is celebrated every year across the country at over 1,700 YMCAs in an effort to get families and kids moving. The YMCA suggests these tips for putting "more play in kids' days:"making physical activity a regular part of family play time, allowing kids to have unstructured playtime, and limiting the use of electronics like television, computer games, and video games.

The YMCA Healthy Kids Day 2010 is free to the public and everyone is encouraged to come out and enjoy a fun and relaxing family outing.
