Earth Day Celebrations

By Sargunjot Kaur

Every day of the year, most of us take advantage of Mother Earth's resources without much thought or a thank you. On April 22 - Earth Day - we are urged to pay homage to our beloved Mother Earth.

The first Earth Day was created by Senator Gaylord Nelson nearly 40 years ago as a nationwide "teach-in" on the environment. It was celebrated by over 20 million citizens throughout the United States. Since then, Earth Day has developed into an international day of environmental action-gaining the attention of over 1.5 billion people worldwide.

The Tri-City community is doing its part to make a difference for our environment.

Washington Hospital is reaffirming its commitment to a healthier community by taking a leading role in environmental awareness. The hospital recognizes the critical correlation between a healthy individual and a healthy environment, celebrating Earth Day by hosting a free community event called "Let's Go Green Together!" on Saturday, April 17. As the name suggests, the event will focus on helping us all understand how to make our community more eco-friendly.

Many local Tri-City organizations (PG&E, Regan Nursery, and "green" experts will be available to educate about conserving energy, recycling, reducing household waste, gardening and composting. Clinical Registered Dietitians will also share healthy eating tips and recipe ideas. The event is a family affair with many fun activities for children including bounce houses, face painting, Earth Day murals, and other free games. Parents can also bring toys and other household items for free lead testing. There will be a free drop-off for electronic wastes, confidential documents for shredding, unused and unwanted medications, and eyeglasses.

East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) will also be celebrating Earth Day by enhancing existing trails and constructing new trails for Regional Parks through the Ivan Dickson Trail Project. Since 1996, the project has managed over 121 trails with the help of nearly 6,000 volunteers and 25,000 plus volunteer labor hours. Maintenance projects will include pruning, erosion control, post installation, trail improvements, and new trail construction.

On Saturday, April 17 as a part of California State Trail Day, EBRPD crew leaders will instruct registered volunteers on how to improve the trails of Del Valle Regional Park and enhance the wildlife habitat. On April 24, volunteers will help clean the Anthony Chabot Regional Park as a part of celebrating Earth Day.

City of Fremont is sponsoring an Earth Day Family Fair on Saturday, April 24. The morning will start off with a creek cleanup at Central Park. Volunteers are instructed to meet at the Boat House and bring water, gloves, and sunscreen. The free event encompasses a wide array of activities including pharmaceutical disposal, eco-friendly exhibits, mercury thermometer exchange, a puppet show, and arts and crafts activities for the kids as well. The event is sponsoring a lamp exchange, where you can turn in your old 300-watt halogen floor lamps with a PG&E bill to exchange for a free, new energy saving lamp.

The Kiwanis Club will be holding their 16th Annual Ducks for Bucks benefit race at Lake Elizabeth on April 24 as well. The fundraiser is to help several non-profit organizations including the Tri-Cities League of Volunteers, Safe Alternatives to Violent Environments and Abode Services.

Union City is joining with Tri-CED Community Recycling and Allied Waste Services to host a Compost Giveaway Day and Electronic Waste Drop-off, free of charge on April 24 for Union City residents. Two bags of nutrient-rich soil will be distributed to residents who present a coupon clipped from the special brochure mailed to Union City households.
