The University of the Philippines (U.P.) Concert Chorus's live performance at Harbor Light combines pop, Broadway, folk, and patriotic Filipino songs. These award-winning performers and their wide-ranging repertoire will visit St. James the Apostle Catholic Church on Saturday, April 17.
The Divine Mercy Eucharistic Society's "Mabuhay Korus" is composed of college-age students from the University of the Philippines. Beginning as a small school choir created by Carlos P. Romulo, the Korus has since expanded and performed in 18 world tours since its inception in the 1960s. In their travels, they have captivated audiences from Austria and Italy to New Zealand and Slovenia. Their performance captures the spirit of Filipino artistry and showcases wonderful dancing and singing.
With unique costumes and choreography, the chorus has received many accolades for their performances, including: Best Choral Group (2009) at the 22nd Aliw Awards in Mega Tent, Pasig City, Philippines and the Diploma of Excellence (2008) at the 44th Montreux Choral Festival in Montreux, Switzerland.
In addition to classic Filipino songs such as "Sa mahal kong bayan" and "Lupang Hinirang," their repertoire includes well-known pop songs like "Wind Beneath My Wings/You Raise Me Up" and "Eye of the Tiger." The chorus's taped performance of "I Believe I Can Fly" has received over 20,000 hits on Youtube.
Tickets to the show are available for purchase from a representative after every mass at St. James. Tickets and may also be purchased from Marissa Vargas (510) 366-3572, Nenita Mariveles (510) 415-0733, or Jim Navarro (510) 468-3402.
