Ohlone, Chabot baseball keeps winning
By Gary van den Heuvel
Both local community colleges continued to play winning baseball, as Ohlone won three games and Chabot College won two of three contests last week.
Ohlone started off the week with a 6-1 win over City College of San Francisco. Freshman George Asmus pitched eight solid innings and picked up the win for the Renegades, striking out six CCSF batters.
Ohlone got on the scoreboard early when a two-out error by the CCSF shortstop on a grounder by Ryan Walterhouse scored two runs in the first inning. In the second inning, Mark Mercer’s triple to center field scored two more runners, and from there, Renegades didn’t look back.
On Monday, March 29, Ohlone’s ace lefty Roberto Padilla improved his record to 8-1 on the season with a 4-2 win over the No. 4-ranked San Mateo Bulldogs. Padilla, who leads the state in wins, allowed only five hits and struck out seven Bulldog batters. Zach Johnson went 3-4 on the day, including an eighth-inning solo homerun which iced the game for the Renegades.
Ohlone won a tight extra-inning pitcher’s duel against Cosumnes River College on Tuesday, March 30. Leading 1-0, the Renegades looked like a lock to win when Jeff Johnson’s two-run homer in the seventh inning put Ohlone up by three. But the Hawks rallied to tie the game in the eighth and send it to extra innings.
The game finally ended in the 13th inning on a pinch hit by Stephen LaCombe which went over the head of the leftfielder, driving in Cody De Mera from second base. Ohlone’s three wins put their record at 18-6 on the year, and 10-3 in Coast Conference play.
Chabot College’s bats were out in force in a 10-2 win over Hartnell. Chipper Lemmo chipped in with a two-run homer in the sixth inning to go along with the stellar performances of Drew Helenihi (2-3, 3 RBIs, R) and Johnny Petros (3-3, 2R, RBI).
Chabot dropped a 6-3 decision to Cosumnes River in the completion of a suspended game from early February, but got some payback with a 13-11 slugfest win in 10 innings over the Hawks. Nick Bartolone had four hits, including two doubles, a triple and three RBIs. Miguel Flores had three hits, scored twice and had two RBIs. Chabot’s record is currently 19-5, 11-2 in the Coast Conference play. |
