Ohlone Renegades and Chabot Gladiators softball teams played the first of two home-and-home Coast Conference North (CCN) league games on Monday, March 29, on the Fremont Campus.

Both teams top starting pitchers â Chabotâs Shannon Merritt; Ohloneâs Jessica Varady â toed the rubber.

After Chabot got a run in the top of the first, Ohlone batted around in its half, sending 11 players to the plate, while plating seven runs, taking a 7-1 lead into the second.

Chabot committed four errors, leading to the crooked number on the scoreboard for Ohlone.

Chabot got a run back in the second on an RBI single by Taylor Cruz, but Ohlone was able to bat around again in the second bringing the lead to 12-2 in favor of the Renegades.

Ohlone scored two in the third and four in the fourth on a double by Stefanie Hatley, singles by Shelby Tomasello and Paulina Gentry and a combination of walks and errors. In the end, Ohlone would blast Chabot, 18-3. Chabot finished the game with nine errors, three more than its hit total for the game. Both sides will meet again on Thursday, April 15, 3 p.m. at Chabot.

Wednesday, Ohlone hosted CCS Monterey Peninsula in another make-up game. Again Varady started in the circle for the Renegades and she would throw a complete game, 7-0 shutout.

Chabot traveled to CCN Foothill on Thursday, April 1. After scoring four runs in the first inning and jumping out to a 6-0 lead after two and a half, the Gladiators hung on for a 6-5 victory.

Meanwhile, Ohlone hosted College of San Mateo on April 1, the team in which they were tied for first in CCN play.

Ohlone struck first when Varady, again pitching, led off the bottom of the first with a walk. After two outs, Tomasello reached on an error and Hatley, swinging the hot bat of late, doubled in the first two runs.

San Mateo answered in the second with three runs to take a 4-2 lead after one and a half.

Both teams would go quietly over the next three and a half before San Mateo pushed across a big insurance run in their half of the fifth on two more Renegade errors (they would end up with six on the day) followed by two singles.

In the bottom of the sixth Tomasello led off with a double which was followed by a two-run blast over the centerfield fence by Hatley. Renegades would get runners on second and third with only one out later in the inning and had the bases loaded with two outs, only to leave the tying run on third.

Ashley Nahale led off the seventh with a single, stole second and scored on Tomaselloâs double. Hatley walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. Megan Ramirez then laid down a bunt and when the throw to first sailed over the first basemanâs head, Tomasello came home with the winning run and the 6-5 victory.

Ohlone is now 23-8-1, and 10-2 in CCN play. They next play at Mission of Santa Clara, Thursday, April 8, 3 p.m. then at Foothill on Saturday, April 10, 11 a.m. before hosting De Anza, Tuesday, April 13, 3 p.m.

Chabot hosted Mission on Tuesday, April 6, score unavailable at press time, then they travel to De Anza on Thursday, April 8, at 3 p.m. Chabot is 4-6 in CCN and 11-20-1 overall. For results of all games and future schedules, log onto TCV Sports Web site, www.tricityvoice.com/sports.
