Simulated disaster drill at Burnett School
Submitted By Eliren Pasion
The City of Milpitas' emergency response personnel and Milpitas Unified School District's staff and students will participate in a school district-wide earthquake drill on Wednesday, April 7, as part of Earthquake Preparedness Month.
This year's disaster drill is at Burnett School, 400 Fanyon Street. Over 650 teachers and students from Burnett School will participate in this simulated exercise along with a number of Milpitas' emergency response personnel from its Public Works, Police and Fire departments, and a variety of volunteers.
The simulated exercise will involve a magnitude 7.2 earthquake on the Calaveras Fault, with an epicenter in Morgan Hill. An after-shock causes a classroom door to jam shut trapping students. Reports indicate students suffer minor injuries.
This added scenario provides an opportunity for emergency personnel from the city and school district to evaluate and address search-and-rescue operations in the future.
This will be the fifteenth year that Milpitas Unified School District and the City of Milpitas have conducted this joint disaster exercise.
