Can you guess what these statistics represent?
It's not from any common bad habits or medical conditions such as smoking, cancer or heart attacks. Before you read any further for the answer, what if we added that more than three out of every four are under the age of 4 years old?
Unfortunately, these statistics represent child abuse in the United States. This is just a glimpse into the laundry list of alarming child abuse statistics that many in our society are unaware of. It's a hidden problem that has and will continue to have dire consequences in our society for the abused, their family and friends and the endless generations that follow.
But, as long as there are community organizations such as the Child Abuse Listening, Interviewing & Coordination Center (CALICO) in San Leandro and community volunteers to help, there is always hope that child abuse will no longer be a pervasive issue in our society.
For people at CALICO and community volunteers that make up the Leadership Fremont Class of 2010, April is and will always be known for more than a month that brings showers and blooming flowers. Since its first presidential proclamation in 1983, April is also National Child Abuse Prevention Month. For the past 27 years, individuals and organizations throughout the country come together in April to raise the public's awareness of the need to prevent and openly discuss child abuse.
For those people who wonder if you can truly have a meaningful impact on preventing child abuse in their community, please take a few minutes to read the article which appeared in the March 24 edition of Tri-City Voice, "A Little Spring Cleaning Goes a Long Way" and go to www.bayareaproud.com to watch the one minute "Bay Area Proud CALICO" video segment which will help you appreciate what can be accomplished by raising awareness and volunteering just a few hours of your time to help organizations such as CALICO. To learn more about CALICO, please visit www.calicocenter.org.
In observance of Child Abuse Prevention Month, CALICO will be hosting their 6th Annual One Child at a Time Benefit - Casino Night - on April 24 at Palio D'Asti Restaurant located at 640 Sacramento St. in San Francisco from 7pm - 11pm. The evening will include delicious food, raffling of prizes and casino night with various "high roller" prizes.
