Bill Mancebo's Player Spotlight: Nicko Ramirez
This week the player spotlight is on Nicko Ramirez.
It's all about baseball with this young man. Making his start with t-ball and now 11, this six-year veteran of the sport plays for the Niles Centerville Little League (NCLL) Majors division Yankees. Ramirez favors the busy part of the infield, choosing to play short stop and third base.
Keeping himself in condition comes natural as he competes year round. Playing the defensive line and center positions for the Fremont Football League (FFL) Chiefs was still not enough activity so he plays hard with his dad. That always includes some wrestling and a bit of martial arts training pretty much every night.
Nicko is a student at Vallejo Mills Elementary, in the fifth grade with favorite subjects of PE, social studies and science. Ramirez says he really likes the science part because he loves to work with chemicals.
The studies will pay off soon because Nicko has big goals. He's keeping his options open and is soon on his way to becoming a police officer, astronaut or maybe even a firefighter.
Every athlete needs a break now and then and when Nicko has a chance he enjoys playing with his PS3 or Jurassic Park video games and is soon to get his hands on Tony Hawk video gaming, too.
When he needs some fresh air he'll head to Quarry Lakes Park for a little fishing to practice for the big angling session that comes once a year. That's when he and his dad head up the "Fisherman's trip" that includes the men of the family where they gather on the Tuolumne River or Lake Berryessa.
When asked about favorite food Ramirez didn't hesitate to call out for a meat lovers' pizza at his favorite Mountain Mike's. For dessert he'll take a large helping of cotton candy or mint chocolate chip ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery.
