Local children recently received free dental treatment, screenings and oral health education thanks to the hard work of volunteers from the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry's Union City Dental Care Center, the Southern Alameda County Dental Society, and the Eden Area Regional Occupational Center. To encourage children to develop good dental habits, the Union City clinic hosted a Give Kids A Smile(r) event as part of a nation-wide, month-long initiative sponsored by the American Dental Association.
Through a partnership with the Southern Alameda County Dental Society, local dentists and dental hygienists teamed up with clinic dentists, staff and dental assisting students to provide free screenings at the January 30 event. When needed, these volunteer dental professionals also performed complex procedures such as fillings and extractions for nearly 100 children.
Children and parents received oral hygiene instructions and free toothbrushes and toothpaste. In addition to the dental services offered, kids were able to participate in a handful of fun activities such as face painting and balloon animals. A volunteer staffer also dressed up as the tooth fairy to entertain all in attendance. This year, Union City Mayor Mark Green stopped by the event to show his support, as did California Assembly member Mary Hayashi and Fremont City Councilmember Sue Chan.
"Events like Give Kids a Smile allow us to help children get started on a lifetime of healthy mouths," said Dr. Lynette Kagihara, director of the Union City Dental Care Center. "We believe that good oral health should begin early in life, and events such as this help us educate and treat children who may otherwise not have access to dental care."
The Union City Dental Care Center is a satellite clinic of the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco. Thanks to educational funding and grants, the clinic offers services at a cost typically 25 - 30 percent lower than that of the average private dental practice.
