HERS Breast Cancer Foundation Awards Luncheon
By Meenu Gupta
HERS Breast Cancer Foundation honors the spirit of hope in the courageous women who face and fight breast cancer. An awards luncheon will recognize and celebrate selected individuals who carry out the organization's mission. The non-profit charitable organization is committed to improving women's health and well-being focusing on breast cancer survivors. "This event is a first for HERS and we are very excited about it,"said HERS Development Director, Karen Jackson.
At the People with Purpose Awards Presentation and Luncheon, the HOPE Award will be presented to Dr. William E. Dugoni Jr., M.D., Director of the Women's Center at Washington Hospital and Vice-Chairman of the Washington Outpatient Surgery Center Board of Directors.
The EMPOWERMENT Award will be presented to Bernie Dutra, Founder & President of the One Child Foundation. Dutra was proud to serve as the honorary co-chair for the very first HERS Breast Cancer Foundations KEEP ABREAST Walk/Run in 2000. She also has served as a member of the HERS Breast Cancer Foundation Board of Directors.
Community Volunteer Activist, Harriet Despeaux will be honored with the RENEWAL Award. She has volunteered at the HERS program, Bras for Body and Soul for over five years. During the years she has served on several local boards and committees. Some of the organizations that have benefited from her generosity include: Abode Services, Allied Housing and American Association of University Women in many local and state positions, Fremont's Housing Scholarship Program, Newark Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and American Cancer Society Board of Directors.
The SUPPORT Award will be presented to Hattie Hyman Hughes, currently serving as Senior Vice President and Community Reinvestment Act Officer for Fremont Bank, as well as President of Fremont Bank Foundation. Hughes has founded two important community development organizations within Fremont Bank: The Women's Leadership Forum and the FB Team H.E.R.O.E.S. program. The Forum is especially credited with furthering the careers of female bank managers with coaching, mentoring and education.
