Santa Clara County seeks veteran nominations

Submitted By Gwendolyn Mitchell and Lingxia Meng

The Santa Clara County Office of Veterans Services invites nominations for the 2010 Friend of the Veteran Award which recognizes residents who have demonstrated their commitment to veterans in Santa Clara County. Nominations are due by April 1, 2010, to the Office of Veterans Services. The award recipient will be recognized during Veterans Appreciation Month in May.

The Office of Veterans Services established the Friend of the Veteran Award in 1991. Walter Dillard, a Mountain View resident, received the award in 2008 for his commitment to veterans including helping patients at VA Palo Alto Hospital, participating in parades and ceremonies as a member of the honor guard and leading Bingo nights for veterans. Margie Lowe, a 90-year-old volunteer at the Veterans Affairs Clinic in South San Jose, received the award in 2009 for spending thousands of hours helping the elderly and disabled veterans, including serving coffee and leading Tai Chi classes and field trips.

"Many members of our community volunteer tirelessly to support our local veterans," said Ken Kershaw, Director of the County Office of Veterans Services. "The Friend of the Veteran Award was created to honor Santa Clara County residents for their dedication and service to local veterans."
