Author Maud Carol Markson will speak about her book "Looking After Pigeon" 2009 at the Milpitas Public Library on Wednesday, March 24. In the novel a line states, "My mother named her children after birds." What kind of mother gives her children bird names?
Set in the world of 1970's New Jersey, this is the story of a fractured family and a pivotal childhood summer. "In this novel, five year old Pigeon's father disappears, leaving her to face a new and bewildering life in an uncle's house on the Jersey shore. These are characters I have imagine - right out of thin air, and also out of my own obsessions for people and language," said Markson.
"These characters are not me, but their emotions are mine. The way they experience the world is mine. They all in some way reveal parts of who I am. And hopefully reveal parts of my readers as well," said Markson who aims to find some truth in her book's characters and their experiences. She penned her first novel "When We Get Home"1989, when she was expecting her son and anxious about being a parent for the first time.
How does growing up with such a name make us who we are? Find out at this free program made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Milpitas Library. "The program is open to all and you do not need to be a member of the book group to attend," said Supervising Librarian, Adult & Teen Services, Melanie McInerney.
Books will be available for purchase and signing. For additional events, check the library's website at www.santaclaracountylib.org and click Milpitas.
