'Green Tree' art in your park dedication

By Steve Wyant

On Saturday March 20, the City of Milpitas and the Milpitas Alliance for the Arts (MAFTA) will dedicate the new "Green Tree" in Pinewood Park at 9 a.m. The dedication will take place, rain or shine, with light refreshments available. Mayor Bob Livengood, members of the Milpitas Public Art Committee and MAFTA will speak during the program.

According to Renee Lorentzen, Acting Senior Center Supervisor, "Green Tree" is an exciting sculpture made of recycled materials. The artist incorporated objects and materials contributed by the Pinewood residents to instill the idea that this art piece belongs to the neighborhood. Bill Gould, the local sculptor who created the work, enlisted the help of Pearl Zanker Elementary School students and neighbors to adorn the "tree" with items normally destined for landfill, filling out the "branches."

The sculpture is a steel framework, 12 ft. wide and 20 ft. tall, funded by an initial budget appropriation of $10,000 from the City. Gould's design was chosen from three submissions, reviewed by several commissions and the Pinewood neighborhood residents and approved by Council.

Bill Gould, President and Principal Architect at Bill Gould Design (BGD), is based in San Jose. According to his website "BGD provides both full-service architectural design and public art, with the specific goal of bridging art and architecture." Dealing almost exclusively with K-12 educational and community facilities, Gould's projects place an emphasis on user participation and team collaboration.

The "Green Tree" dedication is the culmination of a one-time partnership between the Milpitas Public Arts Commission and MAFTA. Art in Your Park is a program developed by MAFTA, where projects they have sponsored can be seen throughout Milpitas parks, schools and city facilities. Formed in 1997, MAFTA has over 150 individual and corporate supporters in its "Circle of Supporters."
