Homicide in Hayward
Submitted By Lt. Chris Orrey, Hayward Police Department
On Sunday, February 28 at about 1:35 a.m. Hayward Police dispatch received a report of a large group of people fighting at Roberto's Cocktail Lounge at 26050 Mocine Avenue, Hayward (cross of Harder Road). About two minutes later, further calls came in indicating shots had been fired.
Patrol officers arrived within a few minutes and encountered a large crowd in the parking lot. Amongst the crowd were a shooting victim and a suspect held by several citizens. The victim, who was receiving Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by a citizen, was transported to Eden Hospital where he died of his injuries.
Preliminary investigation indicate there was a dispute inside the bar that spilled into the parking lot just before closing time. The suspect produced a gun and fired it multiple times, striking the victim, 20-year old Jeremy Hansen of Hayward. It is unknown if Hansen, a Mt. Eden HS alumnus who planned to transfer to San Diego State University from Chabot College, was the intended target. The suspect is in custody in Hayward PD jail charged with murder and probation violation. The suspect's name is not being released at this time.
This is Hayward's sixth homicide of 2010.
