Bill Mancebo's player spotlight: Zackary Soares

This week the player spotlight is on Zackary Soares.

At 7, this young martial artist is quite accomplished. Soares is an advanced white belt and on his way to make rank as a yellow belt. He also sports himself as a baseball and soccer player.

As a catcher in the farm league for the Niles Centerville Little League (NCLL) Lugnuts team, with forward and goalie coverage for several FC Fremont teams; this young man thrives on pure sports adrenaline.

That's where martial arts comes in. The disciplined focus that he learns at T-Kanes Karate School improves his performance levels all the way around, teaching him to use mental control that helps him to excel at all sports.

Zackary knows that school is important in his daily regime and studies hard in the second grade at Brookvale Elementary. He really likes Mr. Nagayo's math teachings but when asked about his favorite part of school he says that playing two-square at recess is the best, that's because of his competitive sporting nature.

Soares also knows that his interest in sports and studies will pay off as his target goal is to become a military soldier. Being a true patriot Zackary looks forward to serving his country sometime in the near future.

In his spare time Soares likes everything Star Wars, playing Lego games, Wii and Xbox. Travel plans are always at his forefront, including trips to Disneyland; many major camping excursions; and dreams to someday see Hawaii and Europe. Soon Zackary will head to Orlando, Fla., and experience Disney World for the first time. This trip will be funded courtesy of the generous Make-a-Wish Foundation.

What's on the menu for a martial artist? His favorite food is a cinch: plain white rice; for dessert: strawberry ice cream will always be his call.
