Newark Police make arrest for Domestic Violence

Submitted By Commander Robert Douglas

On Monday, February 15 at 11:09 a.m., officers of the Newark Police Department responded to investigate a domestic violence incident on Vinewood Street. Officers found the victim and her two sons outside the residence. They learned that the suspect was alone and still inside the residence. Numerous attempts to contact the suspect by telephone, both cell and land line, along with bull horn announcements, went without being acknowledged.

For safety reasons several nearby residents were asked to leave their homes and others were asked to shelter in place as the suspect had access to firearms. Vehicular traffic and pedestrians were not allowed into the area. A perimeter was set around the home as tactical teams from both the Newark and Union City Police Departments responded to assist. As tactical teams were deploying, the suspect surrendered to the Arrest and React Team of the tactical unit without incident.

Gary Lee Burcham, age 55, from Newark, was arrested for Domestic Violence. Prior to booking, Burcham was taken to a local hospital for mental health evaluation. The victim received minor injuries during the incident but did not require medical attention. The incident lasted approximately four hours.
