Ohlone basketball continues winning ways
By Gary van den Heuvel
Ohlone College men's basketball team rebounded from what could have been a demoralizing upset loss to Chabot College on January 27 with two consecutive victories.
The Renegades, who had been undefeated in the Coast North Conference and ranked number one in Northern California before the Chabot game, lost some of their luster with the 64-53 home defeat to the Gladiators, but they came back strong, beating Foothill College, 72-65, on a Friday, Jan. 29, road game, and Ca–ada College, 66-60, on Saturday, Feb. 6, at home.
The win over Foothill was critical: both teams entered the game tied atop the Coast North standings. The Renegades found themselves trailing by four points with less than eight minutes remaining, when 6-foot-9 sophomore Reggie Jones took over the game, putting Ohlone on his back with 12 consecutive points. Jones scored 33 points total, and Lavon Gray chipped in with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Ohlone had to pull off a similar second-half run against Ca–ada College, who led the game 28-22 at the half. It was Jones who again led the way, leading all scorers with 29 points (including 9-10 from the free-throw line). Scott Clark scored 10 points for Ohlone, whose record stands at 7-1 in the conference, 18-4 overall.
Ohlone's women's team seems to be engaged in a game of one-upsmanship with the men's team. Coach Julia Allender's Lady Renegades have rolled through the Coast North Conference. After its 63-31 spanking of Hartnell College on the road on Wednesday, Feb. 3, the Lady Renegades sit at 13-6, 8-0 in conference.
The Renegades have been led by the stellar guard play of Jasmine Rubin and Ganeaya Rogers, who are both considered among the top guards in California.
