Victor Pereira won his contest by forfeit, but the Newark Memorial sophomore didn't need any free passes to win the 147-pound division at the Midcals Tournament at Gilroy High School. Pereira continued his dominating season on the mat with four pins and one win by decision.

At the Albany Invitational, Newark was represented with five medalists: Trevor Hubby (127 pounds) and Jacob Pratt (132 pounds) both finished in fifth place; and Jason Thepkaisone (103), Anthony Arce (121) and Jared Reis (173) each finished seventh.

In other MVAL action, James Logan High School's wrestlers dominated Irvington High School, 78-6; Washington High School edged John F. Kennedy High School, 45-36.

For the Newark Memorial girls wrestling program, Alyssa Hess (154) led the way for the Lady Cougars, winning her bracket at the California Women's Wrestling Association Invitational at Hanford West High School on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 29-30. Newark finished fourth overall in the 121-team field.

Newark will take part in the North Coast Section wrestling tournament later this month (February 27) at John F. Kennedy High School.

In the Hayward Area Athletic League, Hayward High School had a rough week, losing first to Castro Valley High School, 70-6, (Daniels was Hayward's lone winner, at the 140-pound level, pinning Osorio in 1:38) and on Thursday to Arroyo High School, 52-27.
