Bill Mancebo's player spotlight: EJ Santos
This week the spotlight is on EJ Santos.
Santos, 11, is already quite the young athlete. EJ's infield baseball talents led him to cover second base for the Niles Centerville Little League White Sox last season; and he knows soccer too. As a midfielder, he played for the FC Fremont Snipers team.
Santos is also known to be a skilled martial artist, currently an advanced green belt. In 2008, at the first tournament he ever competed in, he took second in forms and third in weapons.
EJ sticks to the basics to stay in shape. Karate practice every day followed by sit-ups and push-ups until he can do no more. He's learned that everything must be fun so playing catch with a football or baseball also adds to his daily regimen.
Santos studies hard at Brookvale Elementary, is in the fifth grade with science as a favorite subject. He is always looking forward to Ms. Phillips' class because he really likes her teaching style as she helps to prepare him for his role as an engineer someday soon. When asked about his favorite part of school, Santos says it's his friends and he has a lot of them. According to EJ he's a good friend to have.
When the school bell rings you can bet that Santos will be hanging out with those treasured pals, or playing on his Xbox, as those top his list of favorite pastimes. He's also been known to do a little skiing near Tahoe or fishing in the Delta when he can find the time.
He knows what he likes when it comes to food and EJ will catch a ride when he can to get to the local Carl's Jr. for a bacon cheeseburger. Dessert can be a toss-up though. It's a tough decision to choose between a Three Musketeers bar or a dish of mint chocolate chip ice cream.
