Transition in Senior programs in Newark

Due to budget and staffing reductions, the Newark Senior Center located on Enterprise Drive will soon be closed. Last day of operation is Friday, January 29. Beginning Monday, February 8, all Senior Services will be held at the Silliman Activity Center located at 6800 Mowry Avenue, Newark. Seniors are welcome to attend "Open House" tours of the Center.

Senior Services at the Silliman Activity Center will be held Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Free daily drop-in activities will be available including use of pool tables, ping pong, air hockey, Wii Fit, computer lab, lounge areas and complementary coffee service. Daily hot lunch is served with 24 hour reservation by calling (510) 578-4840. $3.25 is the suggested donation.

Ongoing classes include AARP driver safety, senior aerobics, computer, guitar, Spanish and digital camera and technology gadgets. Trips and tours to local attractions including plays, museums, and casinos will also continue. Bingo will continue on Thursdays. Free health insurance information and counseling will also continue. Beginning in February the Mercy Brown Bag program will be held at Newark Gardens Senior Satellite homes, Multipurpose Room II, at 35322 Cedar Blvd., Newark. The program runs on the second and fourth Thursday of the every month at 9:30 a.m.

Enjoy the sounds of the Canyon Band at the Valentines Day dance for seniors which will be held on Wednesday, February 10 from 1p.m. - 4 p.m at the Newark Community Center. Tickets will be $5 per person at the door. For more information call (510) 578-4437.
